Earlier today I received a comment on one of my blog posts. The commenter wrote the following:

This writer says he voted for the wicked policies of Joe Biden and the democrats. Accordingly, he is deceived at best and a false brethren at worst. Steer clear of this man even though he speaks truth about the false prophets of today.

This was not the first insult I have ever received from a politically passionate evangelical. I have had others lash out at me because of their political views. For instance another commenter said this on the same post:

So you claim to be a christian and voted for Biden. Your a baby killer as well as he is. I hope your blindfold falls off before its too late. Your so blind you cant see the lies and evil the democrat party has done. You better start reading the true word of God! Anyone with half a brain could see the election was stolen, and they set up Donald Trump. Wake up! Before you wake up in Hell. I wont answer any emails from satans followers, so dont bother sending any.

And another person wrote this to me on a social media site:

I can and do say dogmatically you are no minister of God that I would sit under and based on the scriptures you have no place in the holy sacred pulpit. It’s people like you that compromise the word of God that’s leading the lost straight to hell.

In the same setting, another person accused me of liking pedophiles.

Now, I am not here to defend myself or how I voted in the last Presidential election, but for the purpose of getting my point across it may be necessary to do so, but before I address that, I want you to really listen to the accusations and condemnation that has been levied against me by fellow Christians in the comments above.

I was accused of being deceived and being a false brother, being a baby killer, liking pedophiles, being spiritually blind, being a follower of Satan, having no place in the sacred pulpit, compromising the word of God, and leading people straight to hell. These accusations were made by people who know nothing about me because they disapproved of who I voted for.

They did not take the time to ask questions and enquire so they could understand why I made the decision to vote the way I did? No. they simply dropped the hammer and disqualified me as a brother in Christ.

Now, allow me to share a little about myself and my faith. I love Jesus with all my heart, and I seek to be holy and pure before God. I trust in the precious blood of Christ and the finished work of Christ on the cross for my salvation. I believe in the power of Christ’s resurrection, and make it my aim to always teach wholesome and sound doctrine. I am not perfect, but I love Jesus and I want to please him.

In part, the “Christianity” expressed in the comments by those who disparaged me speak volumes to the why behind my vote. Trump’s influence on evangelicals has emboldened a very unChristlike harshness towards anyone with opposing views, or who may think differently about issues, and because of this evangelicals have all but lost their influence in the United States.

Jesus said, By this shall all men know that you are My disciples, If you have love one for another (John 13:35). If our love for our brothers and sisters in Christ can turn to hate in an instance over politics, then something is severely wrong with our understanding of the gospel.

I wrote the following in one of my posts and I want to share it here:

I have observed as many evangelical Christians have become more increasingly vicious, and quite frankly, hateful towards other Christians and non Christians alike who do not agree with them politically. It is an indoctrination that runs contrary to the Christ-like virtues that those who have put their faith in Christ are called to live by.

Being republican rather than democrat is not a spiritual virtue. Yet the belief that the republican party is doing God’s work, and the democrats are doing the devil’s has taken root within evangelical beliefs. This ideology is deceptive and dangerous because it indoctrinates Christians to believe they are engaged in a kind of “spiritual warfare” against evil forces when the reality is they are the ones who have been taken captive.

When you do not have any patience to listen to fellow Christians who may differ with you politically, when you have no desire to understand why others differ with your views, when all that comes out of you in response is a condescending and hateful attitude, you’re not the truth warrior in any spiritual warfare. You’re the captive.

One of the commenters above expressed his impatience by saying, “I wont answer any emails from Satans followers, so don’t bother sending any.” Rather than exercising self control (a fruit of the Spirit) and patiently bearing with me, he immediately cut me off by accusing me of being a follower of Satan.

I have served Jesus for 42 years at the time of this writing. Did I committed apostasy by casting a vote for Joe Biden? Let’s say for the sake of discussion it was an ill advised decision. Was it so spiritually devastating that it shipwrecked my faith?! Am I really damned to eternal destruction for casting a vote for Joe Biden after more than 40 years of walking with God?

In scripture we are instructed to walk worthy of the vocation wherewith ye are called, with all lowliness and meekness, with longsuffering, forbearing one another in love… ~ Ephesians 4:1-2

Did these believers bear with me in love?

In Colossians we are instructed to put on therefore, as the elect of God, holy and beloved, bowels of mercies, kindness, humbleness of mind, meekness, longsuffering; Forbearing one another, and forgiving one another, if any man have a quarrel against any: even as Christ forgave you, so also do ye. ~ Colossians 3:12-13

Was there any forbearance (patience) expressed in their comments? Was there any forgiveness? Was there any love?

I could go on but I hope you get my point. The Bible has much to say about brotherly love and how we are to treat one another as members of the body of Christ. And this is one of the biggest concerns I have with the influence of Donald Trump on evangelicals. Trump has turned Christians against Christians, and if you know your Bible that is synonymous with turning Christians against Christ (Matthew 25:40, Acts 9:5). According to the New Testament, believers are members of the same body of Christ and have all been made to drink of one Spirit (1 Corinthians 12:13-14).

The viciousness, impatience, and hate that is being expressed by some evangelicals is contrary to the fruit of God’s Holy Spirit. Paul warned the Galatians, brethren, ye have been called unto liberty; only use not liberty for an occasion to the flesh, but by love serve one another. For all the law is fulfilled in one word, even in this; Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself. But if ye bite and devour one another, take heed that ye be not consumed one of another. ~ Galatians 5:13-15

My reason for mentioning that I voted for Joe Biden in a couple of my blog posts was never to promote Joe Biden’s or any democrat’s policies. It was to point out the very thing I am pointing out here and that is many evangelicals have lost their way and have forgotten what the scriptures teach about godliness and brotherly love.

In short, I voted for Joe Biden because I see the ramifications of the Trump influence on the church, and I see the deterioration of democracy under Trump-ism. If you disagree with me, that’s fine, but if I am right about this (God knows), then it was the right decision. If I am wrong, and God knows that as well, it did not change my relationship with God. God did not cast me away for not voting for Donald Trump. My faith in Jesus Christ still stands and I am still a child of God.

My hope is in the Lord Jesus Christ and not in Joe Biden, Donald Trump, or any political party. I pray yours is as well.

    2 Corinthians 11:14
14No wonder, for even Satan disguises himself as an angel of light. 15Therefore it is not surprising if his servants also disguise themselves as servants of righteousness, whose end will be according to their deeds

    • Hi Bill, and thank you for your comment. Since you referenced 2000 Mules, then added the text from 2 Corinthians 11:14-15, this leads me to believe that you are quoting this text to support your political views, but the apostle Paul did not say this in reference to worldly politicians.

Paul was addressing false apostles who were taking advantage of the Corinthians by exalting themselves as superior to Paul, and benefiting financially from Corinthians. If you will read chapters 11 and 12 together and pay attention to the context and flow of thought, this will be evident.

Joe Biden does not claim to be an apostle nor does he claim to be any kind of a spiritual leader. So it is not appropriate to cite 2 Corinthians 11:14-15 to take aim at a President you may not approve of.

As stated in my post above, “I voted for Joe Biden because I see the ramifications of the Trump influence on the church, and I see the deterioration of democracy under Trump-ism.”

I only wish the meat of what I said about brother love, and patience had arrested your attention. Maybe others will hear it.

  2. Dear Brother Miachael….Happened upon your site accidently tonight and after reading ALOT of your comments, i would like to say how “Holy Proud” The Lord & i are of you dear brother. In the face of all the spiritually proud hatefilled comments being thrown back at you, “WE” are very impressed at the patient, Holy Spirit lead, wisdom filled responses, “WE” hear back from you dear brother. i would say that all your comments i have read tonight are absolutely “Bullseye, Right On” and just want you to know that you are not alone in this dear brother. For your encouragement, ..Remember what Elijah says in 1 Kings ch 19 vss 10, 14 & then hear The Masters revealing word back to Elijah in 1 Kings ch 19 vs 18. The Evangelical church leadership ( esp the Prophetic branch of the family ) has been sadly Hijacked by what i call a “Pide-Piper” sort of a spirit. They believe a lie that they are convinced by their hypnotized leaders is the truth >>>> but of course it is NOT. Stay True to your calling my brother. It IS not falling on deaf ears, it IS making a difference ! Cheering you on Brother Michael. Jj

  3. First, I explained in my article why I voted for Joe Biden. Secondly, much of what you have said comes from disinformation. Thirdly, I want you to go to my article Deconstructing Christian Nationalism: Post Three New Testament Evangelism. I will give the link at the end of this reply to you. The reason I want you to go to that post is to first read it hear what I have to say, then read the comment written by Terry who is homosexual and then read my reply to him.

Then come back and read this article again (actually read it and listen this time around) and put it all together and you will (if you are truly honest and thoughtful) have a better understanding of my position. Did you even read this article before you commented?

According to the apostle Paul we are to judge matters in the church, and God will judge those outside the church. When the church is more concerned about the LBGTQ community outside the church than adultery, fornication, and all manner of sin within the church, that’s a problem.

My question to you is this: Are you as passionate about purity in the house of God as you are about policing morality in the world? If so, you would have understood my point in this article.

Here is the link to the other post I want you to read, and the comment from Terry, and my reply to him.

    • Your comment came back way too fast to have read my article, Terry’s comment, and my reply to him.

It is absolutely astonishing that you think I made Terry feel OK about his sin when I shared the truth of the scriptures with him. Paul tells us that the servant of the Lord must not strive; but be gentle unto all men, apt to teach, patient, In meekness instructing those that oppose themselves; if God peradventure will give them repentance to the acknowledging of the truth.

That is precisely how I responded to Terry.

I shared with Terry what Jesus said about sexual sin. I shared with him what Paul said. I shared with him what Jude said. I told him that homosexuality is a sin that is forgivable by God. If you think I was dancing around and that I don’t understand the gospel after I shared the scriptures (what Jesus, Paul, and Jude said), then you might just want to check your version of the gospel.

For anyone who may read these comments. Here is what I wrote to Terry:

Thank you for investing the time to write your comment. It is my sincere hope that you will prayerfully consider my response which is being written with genuine sincerity and kindness.

Too many times we see what we want to see in the scriptures. The homophobic person, sees a God who hates gay people, and who condemns gay people, thus they feel justified in expressing their ugly behavior towards those within the LGBTQ community.

Conversely, it is easy to justify homosexuality by appealing to the doctrine of grace and salvation by faith. I am convinced this is what has happened with you based on what you have written. You said, “I would like to point out that the issue of sexuality was something that Jesus Himself was completely silent on during His time on Earth.” Secondly, you said, “I read every recorded word that Jesus said.”

Contrary to your conclusion, Jesus did address sexual sins in the gospels on multiple occasions. Consider his words from the Sermon of the Mount:
Ye have heard that it was said by them of old time, Thou shalt not commit adultery: But I say unto you, That whosoever looketh on a woman to lust after her hath committed adultery with her already in his heart. ~ Matthew 5:27-28

      Adultery is a heart issue.

Likewise, Jesus refers to fornications as sin which comes from the heart in Matthew 15:19 and Mark 7:21.
In scripture same sex relations fall under the category of fornications. Jude specifically refers to the men of Sodom as fornicators (Jude 1).

Yes, they were sexual predators, but they were also fornicators. Never once does the scriptures justify same sex relationships and there is not a single text that even speaks well of it. That should be worth considering.

You mentioned that homosexuality is condemned in Leviticus under the law and you appealed to the book of Galatians that we are not justified by the law, to which I agree, but this does not change the fact that those things which were revealed as universal sins under the law are now justified under grace.

Paul says to the Romans, What shall we say then? Are we to continue in sin that grace may abound? By no means! How can we who died to sin still live in it? Do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? We were buried therefore with him by baptism into death, in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might walk in newness of life. ~ Romans 6:1-4

As we go through Romans 6, we find that walking in the newness of life means following the Spirit in a life that pleases God. Justification by faith through grace leads us to seek to serve God in obedience to Christ. And if you truly want to obey the will of God for your life you will take to heart those texts in New Testament which deal with sexual purity.

You wrote a lot about Jesus’s death and resurrection to justify your sexual orientation, but there was no mention of the work of the cross in your life in relation to the Spirit of the Lord leading you into a crucified life. You have communicated to me that God has justified your same sex passion/attraction/desires rather than calling you to a surrendered life pleasing to Him. There is no mention of your willingness to give up your sexual orientation for the Lord’s sake.

Could it be that it is your own heart that is justifying your lifestyle rather than the Lord? Consider this question in view of the scriptures.

In Galatians (the same book you cited regarding not being justified by the law) Paul refers to fornication as a work of the flesh contrary to the leading of the Spirit (Galatians 5:19). In Ephesians, Paul says, that fornication should not be named even once among us once we have become saints. ~ Ephesians 5:3

Why do you justify homosexuality as if the Lord has led you this way when the apostles said otherwise. In Acts 15, fornication was one of the things that the apostles and elders admonished the Gentile believers to abstain from even though they had determined that these same Gentiles were not under any obligation to be circumcised and come under the Law. So while we are free from the Law, we should abstain from fornication of which homosexuality is a part.

Again, homosexuality is a kind of fornication.

Consider Paul’s words from his first epistle to the Thessalonians:

Furthermore then we beseech you, brethren, and exhort you by the Lord Jesus, that as ye have received of us how ye ought to walk and to please God, so ye would abound more and more. For ye know what commandments we gave you by the Lord Jesus. For this is the will of God, even your sanctification, that ye should abstain from fornication: That every one of you should know how to possess his vessel in sanctification and honor; Not in the lust of concupiscence, even as the Gentiles which know not God: That no man go beyond and defraud his brother in any matter: because that the Lord is the avenger of all such, as we also have forewarned you and testified. For God hath not called us unto uncleanness, but unto holiness. He therefore that despiseth, despiseth not man, but God, who hath also given unto us his Holy Spirit. ~ 1 Thessalonians 4:1-8

Throughout your comment you repeatedly speak of what the Lord has shown you as if you are being led by the Spirit, but your claim does not align with Paul’s words to the Thessalonians. God’s will is our sanctification and this includes abstaining from fornication of which homosexuality is a part. Paul explicitly says God’s will is that we know how to possess our vessel (our body) in sanctification and honor. Not in lust of concupiscence (sexual desires).

Paul tells the Corinthians that no effeminate (homosexual) person shall inherit the Kingdom of God. If you were my neighbor I would be kind to you and treat you with respect, but I have to tell you the truth. God has not led you into a mindset that justifies homosexuality. It is your own heart that has done so.

May God grant you the grace you need to seek to live according to his will and not yours.

      • I did not vote for homosexuality. I voted for democracy. One of Trump’s cabinet members was a homosexual who also referred to Trump as the most pro gay President.

Now, you admitted you missed some of my post. The reality is, you are missing a lot. You need to go back and read all of it and comprehend my point before commenting. I knew you were not actually reading it all and taking in what I was saying.

      • I ended this post that you are commenting one by saying this:

In short, I voted for Joe Biden because I see the ramifications of the Trump influence on the church, and I see the deterioration of democracy under Trump-ism. If you disagree with me, that’s fine, but if I am right about this (God knows), then it was the right decision. If I am wrong, and God knows that as well, it did not change my relationship with God.
