And Salmon begat Booz of Rachab; and Booz begat Obed of Ruth; and Obed begat Jesse; And Jesse begat David the king; and David the king begat Solomon of her that had been the wife of Urias… ~ Matthew 1:5-6
The verses above are from the genealogical record of Jesus.
The King James version says, “Salmon begat Booz of Rachab.” A better rendering would say “Salmon begat Boaz of Rahab.”
Do you remember Rahab? She was formerly a prostitute who feared God and hid the Israeli spies before Israel entered the Promised Land. God blessed her and she became a member of the nation of Israel. She married Salmon and became a ancestress of both King David and the Lord Jesus Christ.
Boaz, aka the kinsmen redeemer, was a descendant of Salmon and Rahab. Boaz married Ruth who was a Moabite and Boaz and Ruth became the great-grand parents of King David.
Notice that King David had Gentiles ancestors on both sides of his family tree. His great grandfather, Boaz, had Gentile ancestors because he descended from Salman and Rahab. And King David’s great grandmother Ruth was a Moabite Gentile before she married Boaz.
Remember as you study scripture, Israel under the Old Testament was not called to be a holy race but a holy nation instead. And every descendant of Salmon and Rahab, and, Boaz and Ruth, had Gentile ancestors including King David the beloved king of Israel, King Solomon the builder of the temple, and Zadok the righteous priest!
