DOES GOD REQUIRE HIS PEOPLE TO BE PRO-ISRAEL?

    • I would say that that fits within the Old Testament context. In the New Testament, Jesus said, O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, thou that killest the prophets, and stonest them which are sent unto thee, how often would I have gathered thy children together, even as a hen gathereth her chickens under her wings, and ye would not! Behold, your house is left unto you desolate. ~ Matthew 23:37-38

And Paul writing to the Galatians says, For this Hagar is mount Sinai in Arabia, and answereth to Jerusalem which now is, and is in bondage with her children. But Jerusalem which is above is free, which is the mother of us all. ~ Galatians 4:25-26

The writer of Hebrews says, ye are come unto mount Zion, and unto the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem, and to an innumerable company of angels, To the general assembly and church of the firstborn, which are written in heaven, and to God the Judge of all, and to the spirits of just men made perfect… ~ Hebrews 12:22-23

Just as the priesthood, the sacrifices, and the temple pointed to something greater. Jerusalem was the physical location of the house of God and the beloved city of the first covenant in which God’s Kingdom was manifested through a physical nation. So praying for the peace of Jerusalem would certainly fit that context. The first covenant was preparatory for the fullness that would be realized in Christ’s Kingdom. When we come to the New Testament, the power of the gospel moves the eyes upward to Christ’s Heavenly Kingdom, where the Heavenly Jerusalem is. Even in the book of the Revelation the focus is the New Jerusalem coming down out of Heaven and not the old Jerusalem on earth. We see further evidence of this in Acts 2 when Peter preached that Jesus’ resurrection and exaltation at the right hand of God was fulfillment of God’s promise that one of David’s descendants would be the Messiah, and would sit upon his throne forever. This promise to David is not something in waiting that will one day be fulfilled, it was fulfilled when Jesus was exalted to the highest place of honor at the right hand of God. Paul also speaks of the resurrection of Jesus as God fulfilling his promises to David in Acts 13:33-39.
