From Peter, an apostle of Jesus Christ, to those temporarily residing abroad (in Pontus, Galatia, Cappadocia, the province of Asia, and Bithynia) who are chosen according to the foreknowledge of God the Father by being set apart by the Spirit for obedience and for sprinkling with Jesus Christ’s blood. May grace and peace be yours in full measure! ~ 1 Peter 1:1-2
Peter, writing to Jewish immigrants, tells them that they are chosen by God’s foreknowledge, and the same is true of all God’s saints. The Father that has chosen us, and set us apart by his Holy Spirit for the purpose of being obedient children who are sprinkled or cleansed by the blood of his Son, Jesus.
Let us pause and thank the Father. Pray this briefly with me, Thank you Father, for choosing me in you foreknowledged to be you obedient child, set apart by your Spirit, and cleansed by the blood of your Son, Jesus.
In response to this wonderful truth, Peter says, Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! ~ 1 Peter 1:3
When the language of “blessed” is used in scripture as an expression towards God, it is an expression of praise and thanksgiving that glorifies God.
Being chosen in God’s foreknowledge, to be set apart by his Spirit, and purified by his blood, and graced with obedient hearts, is a praiseworthy truth that should never be forgotten.
What a fellowship and joy it brings to the heart of the child of God, to praise the One who has sent his Spirit to sanctify us, and to purify us in the blood of his Son. He is the blessed Father, worthy of our praise.
Peter continues:
By his great mercy he gave us new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, that is, into an inheritance imperishable, undefiled, and unfading. It is reserved in heaven for you … ~ 1 Peter 1:3-4
Peter will go on to tell his audience that this is what brings you great joy, although you may have to suffer a short time in various trials.
The human mind cannot possibly grasp the depths of God’s mercy, nor the far reaching possibilities of his grace. Only the Spirit of the Lord can communicate to us the glory of this inheritance.
It is by the Spirit who sanctifies us that we with hearts full of gratitude, glorify the Father with thanksgiving and praise for the glorious grace he has bestowed on us in Christ Jesus.
Let this be the anthem of prayer today, let your heart proclaim, Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ!
